Catalog note
Catalog note. Material: even celadon nephrite with a faint russet inclusion at one foothill — left, not excised, in keeping with pebble-jade aesthetics. Form: the conventional five-peak mountain (wufeng) brush rest; each peak differs slightly in height so a wet brush may rest in the valleys. Technique: underside flat and well polished for stability on the writing table. Dating rationale: the five-peak schema is Ming–Qing; the stone color, restrained finish, and scale favor a Ming–Qing transition workshop rather than later tourist production. Cultural context: the brush rest is landscape and tool at once — the scholar’s world reduced to the length of a palm, echoing the same mountain metaphor as the ink stone and the scholar’s rock. Display: pair with a brush laid across a valley; do not load the rest with multiple brushes in exhibition.
