Catalog note
Catalog note. Material: mature bamboo cylinder; nodes of the culm used as the ground line of the carved landscape — a structural wit typical of fine bitong carving. Subject: four scholars at a stone table in a pine grove — one unrolling a painting, another with a cup — the studio picturing the studio. Technique: exterior in relief; interior smoothly finished; foot is a later hardwood plug, a common and honest repair that does not obscure the bamboo body. Dating rationale: subject matter, carving depth, and bamboo quality align with 18th-century Qing literati taste; later pieces often coarsen the figural modeling. Cultural context: the bitong (brush pot) holds brushes upright and holds an image of gathering — friendship, painting, and wine as the social face of scholarship. Exhibition note: empty of brushes so the relief can be read; mention the foot plug on the wall card as conservation history.
